Resources
- Who can I ask for help?
- We've created a queue for this project in Science's ticket-tracking software (RT. Just email ScienceHelp@purdue.edu.
- I've got a suggestion, critique or need for this service.
- We're very open to hearing from Science IT people to help improve this service, just email ScienceHelp@purdue.edu.
Server Configuration
- The chat server runs openfire, a dual-licensed (GPL and commercial) xmpp server that runs on Jetty.
- The server is a RHEL4 WS VM hosted on the College of Science Virtual Machine infrastructure.
- All of the certificates used for this service are dummy certs that will not validate against the cert chain embedded in your application. The only problem we encountered, because of this is iChat's insistence that the xmpp over ssl connection was insecure. To fix that message, you should import the dummy cert into your Apple Keychain.
- The web interface administration application uses Administrator's career accounts.
Justification
The chat.science.purdue.edu server is being developed as an interactive, real-time collaborative tool for use in the College of Science. It is currently in the early testing stages. If you encounter any problems, please e-mail ScienceHelp@purdue.edu.
Common Uses
- CoS IT project collaboration.
- If your isn't coworker isn't across the room or down the hall, "chatting" makes sense. (And sometimes, even if s/he is!)
- Quick questions that only need a quick answer. Email is a little heavy for this kind of back and forth.
